PsyD vs. PhD IN CLINICAL PSYCHOLOGY

  • There are two types of doctoral degrees in psychology: a PsyD and a PhD. 

    • A PsyD is a Doctor of Psychology.

    • A PhD is a Doctor of Philosophy.

  • Both doctoral degree programs prepare you for a career in psychology, but they have different  goals and purposes. 

    • PsyD doctoral degrees focus on the practical and clinical applications of psychology. The PsyD program provides clinical training and teaches you how to apply scientific knowledge of psychology and how to work with patients and clients in a professional environment. It is application and therapy focused. 

    • PhD doctoral degrees in psychology focus on research methods and the theoretical concepts of the subject. It requires you to contribute novel findings in a specific area of research, however you can also practice psychotherapy in professional and/or private settings. It is academia and research focused.

FAQs

Is Someone With a PsyD a Doctor?

Yes, they receive a doctorate just like with a PhD. However only medical doctors can prescribe drugs in Canada.

 

Is a PsyD or PhD Better?

Neither is better, it depends on your career path. Having one does not necessarily stop you from pursuing research or therapy. 

 

Does a PsyD Require a Dissertation?

It depends on the university, some programs require it while others don't.
